One Last Call

Every salesperson knows that feeling at the end of the day—the fatigue, the quiet voice that says, “You’ve done enough.” But sometimes, success hides just behind the next door.

Back in the early 1980s, I was selling tax accounting software—on what we called “mini computers” at the time. One afternoon, I was finishing my calls in a small town in southern Minnesota called New Ulm. It was about 4:30, and I’d already had a full day. I was ready to call it quits.

But as I drove down the main street toward home, I noticed an accounting firm that was not on my call list. I hesitated. I thought, “What’s one more call?” So, I parked the car, walked to a basement office, and introduced myself.

As it turned out, that firm was actively looking for a new tax accounting system. That unplanned stop turned into my biggest sale—and one of the largest in our company’s history.

Track Selling Insight

Sales success often happens just beyond the point where most people stop. Persistence isn’t about working endlessly—it’s about following through, even when it would be easy to stop.
